The ongoing 2026 World Cup on Monday15/06/26 saw a fixture in Group H of European Champions, Spain, against a ‘less’ formidable, and an ‘obscure’ group of islands; Cape Verde (Cabo Verde in Portuguese), located off the West Coast of Africa.
The match began with most audiences touting Spain as Favourites to win. Afterall, Germany who was not the European Champions had given Curaçao a 7:1 thrashing at the Houston Stadium in Texas. And so the expectation that the Spaniards would demolish Cape Verde became something of a mere business as usual.
It therefore took everyone by surprise (the Spaniards included) when the Spaniards were denied their just expectations from this match. Initially the Spanish Fans were dancing and celebrating their much-anticipated win. Cape Verdeans however kept flocking to the Spanish players like fleas building an impenetrable wall for the Spaniards to enter
They followed their Coach’s 4-4-1-1 formation (Football Experts drop more insight) and built a defence stronger in more ways than the Walls of Jericho.
Prominent of performances was that which was depicted by 40-year old Vozinha, the Goalkeeper of Cape Verde, who did everything within his power and skill to prevent a ball from crossing into his goal post. By the 79th minute, the Spanish Manager Luis de la Fuente watched in visible disbelief and consternation. Even ‘Wonderboy’ Lamine Yamal with his unbelievable football prowess and his wide-angle style of play could do nothing to prevent the Cape Verdeans maintaining a clean sheet, thus securing their first ever point on the World Stage in their maiden World Cup Appearance. Later, Vozinha would amass over 1 Million followers on Instagram, and would climb to 6.1 Million followers (and counting) in under 24 hours, leaving the pitch a global sensation and hero, in the eyes of the whole World.
This is more than an inspiring story, this is a performance of a lifetime, one he took 40 years to prepare for, and one that outlasts even generations.
