ITTYWRITE SPORTS WORLD CUP DIARIES (2026)

The World Cup is here again and the euphoria is palpable. From the official World Cup Song to the Jingle, to the Teams, Individual countries’ official World Cup songs, the Rivalries, the Racism, the Just Expectations and the surprises, the momentum only seems to gather moss, and it is exciting to see it all.

Here, we go through some unforgettable moments from the World Cup:

  • First World Cup with 3 hosts: USA, Mexico and Canada
  • Dai Dai – an Italian phrase which means let’s go, Shakira low key referred to her breakup with former Partner Gerard Piqué (the greatest Fumbler of all time)
  • A viral meme of Shakira being the first woman to get Leo Messi to speak English for the World Cup Jingle (We are Ready)
  • USA refused a visa to Africa’s Somali Referee; Omar Artan, citing involvement with Terrorist organizations.
  • USA refusing visas to certain players: Iran players’ visas cancelled at the eleventh hour. Also Iranian players and officials were refused stay anywhere in the USA and therefore they had to shuttle by flight between Mexico and the United States for matches and training
  • Ghana’s Thomas Partey reportedly denied visa for entry into Canada for Ghana’s opening match against Panama. Ghana appeals the decision, followed by diplomatic talks, the decision still upheld, citing Partey’s ongoing rape trial although the issue is yet to be determined. Guess what? Guilty until proven innocent.
  • Cape Verde’s Goalkeeper and his team denied European Champions Spain their just expectation of a 3-point win during their opening match;
  • Mbappe scoring a brace against Senegal after being denied a penalty by the VAR (Have to say that this was a right decision ), becoming the current French player with the most goals at the World Cup
Mbappe in celebration after scoring his 14 and 15th World Cup goals to make him the player with the most World Cup goals for the French side
  • Erling Haaland with a brace against Iraq, Norway’s first goals at the World cup in 28 years
  • Finding out that Iran drew 2 all against New Zealand
  • Scotland secure a win over Haiti amid controversial referee decisions
  • Waking up to Messi’s Hat-trick against Algeria – Messi fans then terrorize those of us who slept and neglected to watch the match at 3 am
  • Africa no longer a walkover for Europe and the West; shall not be so easily discounted!
African teams exhibiting tenacity and increasing confidence: 2 wins, a loss and all draws against even confirmed Champions
